1. ‘Laman Diva’ is Make in India Week logo
- Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on 08 Jan 2016 unveiled “Laman Diva” as the logo of the first Make in India Week scheduled to be held in Mumbai between February 13 and 18, which will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
- The Laman Diva or Nanda Deep, has great relevance in our culture as a symbol of auspicious beginning, peace, prosperity, growth.
- “Laman Diva” is a lamp designed using cogs and wheels.
- The Make in India Week will be jointly organized by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Union ministry of commerce and industry, CII and Maharashtra government at Bandra-Kurla Complex from February 13-19.
2. RBI Dy Governor Patel gets Second term
- Urjit Patel, Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in-charge of the monetary policy department, has been re-appointed for a term of three years.
- Mr. Patel, 52, who will complete his three-year term on January 10, could become the longest serving deputy governor in recent times if he serves the full three-year term.
- Most of recent deputy governors served a maximum of five years.
- RBI has four Deputy Governors, two are from outside, a commercial banker and an economist while two others are promoted from within its ranks.
- The other three Deputy Governors of RBI are: H.R. Khan, S.S. Mundra and R. Gandhi.
3. Premji most generous Indian
- Wipro Ltd chairman Azim Hashim Premji, unsurprisingly, was ranked the most generous Indian of the year for the third time in a row on the Hurun India Philanthropy List 2015 released on 08 Jan 2016.
- Premji donated Rs.27,514 crore for education through the eponymous Azim Premji Foundation.
- Mr. Premji is followed by Nandan Nilekani and wife, Rohini Nilekani, with donations of Rs. 2,404 crore, while Infosys co-founder N.R. Narayana Murthy stood third with donations of Rs. 1,322 crore
4. French Army to participate in Republic Day parade
- For the first time in the history of India, a strong contingent of French Army will march down the Rajpath on Republic Day along with Indian troops in the presence of President Francois Hollande who is the chief guest for this year’s celebrations.
- French Army is already in India for a joint military exercise, ‘Shakti 2016′. This will be the fifth time that a French leader will be a Chief Guest at India’s Republic Day celebrations — the maximum number from any country so far followed by Bhutan.
5. Bhanumurthy new COO of Wipro
- Bhanumurthy BM, president and chief executive of the business application services (BAS) business, has been appointed as the as the President and Chief Operating Officer and also appointed another senior leader G. K. Prasanna as the head of a newly formed created unit, Marketing, Innovations and Technology (MIT).
- Wipro has also formed a new team Marketing, Innovations and Technology, which will focus on non-linear growth engines, products and platform based services
6. South Korea’s adopted a resolution for fourth nuclear test
- South Korea’s Parliament on 8 January 2016 adopted a resolution, denouncing the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK)’s fourth nuclear test, urging the DPRK to dismantle its nuclear programme.
- The resolution passed at the National Assembly in Seoul, South Korea was unanimously through the National Assembly two days after Pyongyang announced its first successful test of a hydrogen bomb.
- The resolution denounced the DPRK’s nuclear test as a serious provocative act threatening the lives and safety of South Koreans and the peace in Northeast Asia and the world.
7. China’s country code domain “.cn” becomes world’s largest
- China’s country code domain ‘.cn’ has become the world’s most commonly used in the internet with 16.36 million users, surpassing Germany’s ‘.de’ domain.
- ‘cn’ is managed through a branch of the Ministry of Industry and Information.
8. Sailesh appointed new Registrar General
- Additional Secretary of Home Affairs, Sailesh, on 7 January 2016 was appointed as the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India.
- Sailesh, a 1985 batch IAS officer of Assam-Meghalaya cadre, is presently Additional Secretary in Home Ministry.
- He has been appointed in place of C Chandramouli, who completed his tenure.
9. Tata Steel bags PM’s trophy
- Tata Steel has been declared as the winner of Prime Minister’s Trophy for being the ‘Best Performing Integrated Steel Plant’ in the country for the performance year 2013 – 2014.
- This Award has been conferred on the Company for the eighth time.
- The Prime Minister’s trophy, instituted in 1992-93 on the suggestion of the then Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao, recognizes the outstanding performance of the integrated steel plants.
10. Miguel Tabuena wins Hilton Asian Tour Golfer
- The Philippines’ Miguel Tabuena on 7 January 2016 was voted as the Hilton Asian Tour Golfer of Month for December 2015.
- Tabuena won the award ahead of Thailand’s Phachara Khongwatmai and India’s Himmat Rai. The trio were nominated by a selection panel before going into a voting process.
